How Do You Know When It Is Time to Replace Your Water Heating Systems?
Several key indicators to look out for may signal an impending need for replacement, such as corrosion, discolored hot water, rusty pipes, leaking tanks, clanking noises from inside the tank, and more.
It is also important to consider installation costs versus repair costs when considering whether or not to replace your current unit. Depending on the nature of the problem, these costs could offset each other. However, further investigation may be required based on the severity of the issue(s).

Conventional Water Heater
Conventional water heaters store water in a varying size tank. Electric or gas energy is utilized to maintain the water at a set temperature until a faucet is turned on and water is pulled through the pipe. A conventional electric or gas water heater should last about 11 years. Newer conventional water heaters are more energy efficient than older models. A high-efficiency model can reduce water heating bills by about 7 percent.
Tankless Water Heater
A tankless water heater is generally more energy efficient as it heats water on demand. When the tap is turned on, the heater kicks on to supply a continuous supply of hot water. A tankless water heater requires less space and can hang on a wall, but may require larger gas lines, special venting or additional electric circuits which all add to larger upfront costs. However, a tankless water heater has a longer life expectancy of 15-20 years and could reduce heating bills by up to 30 percent.
Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater
A hybrid water heater combines conventional tank storage with a heat pump that extracts heat from the air and uses it to help heat the water. A hybrid water heater uses existing water and electrical connections, and can reduce water heating costs by almost 60 percent.
Solar Water Heater Systems
Solar water heater systems use the sun to generate hot water. Solar water systems are either passive or active. Passive solar water heating systems are cost less, but are also less efficient. However, passive systems can be more reliable and may last longer. Active solar water heating systems utilize pumps and controls to circulate water into the home. Most solar water heating systems require a well insulated storage tank and a backup system for cloudy days and high water demand.

What is the life span of a water heater?
The average conventional water heater (the kind with a water tank) will last eleven years before it needs to be replaced. However, we’ve seen many water heaters last 20 years or longer if they were well maintained and the local water is soft with a low mineral content. You can expect a tankless water heater to last around 20 years if it is properly maintained.
Why do I not have any hot water?
Most likely something is preventing your water heater from making hot water. If you have a gas water heater, check to be sure that the pilot light is operating. If you have an electric water heater, check that your water heater is getting power. Be careful working with gas or electricity. If you don’t feel safe, call a plumber.

Phasellus fringilla tellus id risus sagittis auctor.
How do I maintain my water heater?
There are different maintenance requirements for conventional gas and electric water heaters and with tankless water heaters. Check your manufacturer’s recommendations and follow them carefully. However, in general terms, you’ll want to drain sediment from your water heater tank on an annual basis and tankless water heaters will require at least an annual descaling to keep them operating efficiently.
What is the most common problem with water heaters?
The most common problem with gas water heaters is the pilot light. Either it won’t stay lit or there are problems with the ignitor that prevent it from lighting. Either condition will prevent the unit from heating water.
