What is an Undermount Bathtub?

It is similar to a drop-in bathtub but with a flat rim. Because drop-in tubs are intended to be seen, they often have rounded edges. An undermount can be used as a drop in tub. However, you cannot always use a drop in as an undermount.

Undermount tubs can be installed with feet or a flat basin that rests on a floor. These tubs are installed with a surround or deck.

Chuck Khiel, vice-president of Fred Home Improvement, Bethesda (Maryland), says that the deck’s surface covers the rim and hangs above the edge of the tub into its basin. This creates a seamless transition between the deck’s surface and the tub. Khiel says that it has the same look and feel as an undermount kitchen basin.

Only the basin is visible from the tub. Undermount tubs are so attractive because of their sleek design.

Khiel says that most are installed by homeowners who want a luxurious look. People want their bathrooms to feel like a spa.

Undermount Bathtub Types

Undermount tubs can be found in a variety of sizes and materials, just like drop-in bathtubs.

  • Shapes. Choose from an oval, round or rectangular shape. Khiel says that he has seen an undermount tub with a corner four-foot square. Khiel says, “I suppose you would have to bathe with the knees bent.”
  • Materials. acrylic is the most popular tub material and has the highest heat retention. Khiel says that acrylic is warmer than cast iron because of the feedback from clients. You can also find enamel-coated, solid surface and copper. You can choose from many colors.
  • Sizes. There are no limits to the options. A custom tub can be made to fit any space.
  • Features. Undermounts can be luxuriously crafted with additional features. You can have them deepened with sloped sides to allow for comfortable soaking. They can also be jetted or equipped with speakers. Even more fixtures can be added, such as hand-held showerheads.

What materials are best for an undermount bathtub deck?

Khiel says that a solid surface is the best. It performs best.” This could be natural stones or a manufactured product.

Brandon Ewers, a sales representative with Pirch, a showroom that sells outdoor space, kitchens, and bathrooms in La Jolla California, says “The deck surface material usually matches the surrounding walls.”

What about bathroom tiles? Khiel does not recommend tile for bathrooms. He says, “We haven’t used tile on decks since years.” It is more difficult to maintain and can crack from normal expansion and contractions of the wood deck surround.

Undermount Bathtub Cost

Drop-in tubs are about the same price as undermounts. However, they tend to be more expensive than freestanding tubs. The price will vary depending on the material, shape, and any other special features.

Khiel says that an average five-foot standard undermount acrylic tub costs around $1,500. Copper tubs will be more expensive. He says that a copper tub can be sold for up to $10,000.

Undermount Bathtub Installation

Installing an undermount tub is more challenging than installing a drop in. Khiel says that the tub must be level with the subfloor. “The surround frame is made up to the tub’s height.”

If the surface finish material is solid, it will be templated and an opening made from it. After the tub has been firmly installed, it needs to be dropped onto its surround. Everything must be perfectly aligned. The deck surface can crack if the tub is not perfectly level or the surround and deck are not constructed precisely. This makes DIY a more difficult task.

Best Undermount Bathtubs

Your undermount space will determine its size and shape. It will be more expensive if it is custom-made than a standard size. Price will also be affected by the material you choose. Ewers suggests these options:

  • Good value: “Kohler makes good undermount tubs,” he says. Their Underscore series is available in several sizes. The Underscore series has a sleek look that is very popular but there are no customization options.
  • From average to extravagant: Ewers states that Hydro System can make nearly any drop-in tub undermounts. They are all custom-made and completely customizable. Prices range from $2,000 to $4,000.
  • Luxurious: Ewers says that although the price of a MTI Bath is higher, they still have gorgeous tubs and are custom-made. Costs: From $3,000 to $8,000.
